How to Write the Funny at SMC
Comedy writing is not a mysterious talent reserved for a lucky few who are "naturally funny." It's a skill that can be learned, practiced, and refined.
This workshop is designed for writers of all experience levels. Class lectures highlight the structures comedy writers rely on – illustrated through excerpts from prose, scripts, sitcoms, and films. And, through hands-on exercises, you'll put those same structures to work – we’ll analyze humorous writing, punch up sitcom scripts, and break down the structures underlying successful screen comedy.
Most importantly, you'll discover that anything on your mind or in your heart can be expressed through humor. Whimsical or heartfelt, silly or profound, memoir or spoken word, sitcom, feature-length rom-com, or serialized short-form comedy for YouTube Shorts, there are no limits to what can be written funny.
